Defending Our PV System from Cyberattacks

Wednesday, September 25, 2019 | 11:30 AM - 12:00 PM | Location: 250A | Emily Hwang Presenting

With more utilities requiring remote grid support features, Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) are more vulnerable than ever to cyberattacks. It is important for the solar industry to address this vulnerability prior to mandating nationwide site connectivity. As solar becomes a larger portion of the US energy mix, this weakness may play a key issue in national security if not addressed. This Quicktalk will cover different types of cyberattacks and the history of cyberattacks on energy resources; discuss the research being done by NREL, Sandia and Yaskawa Solectria Solar; and explain what designers can do to ensure that their data and system controls do not fall into the wrong hands.

About Solar Power International

Solar Power International, Energy Storage International, and North America Smart Energy Week is powered by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA). It's anchor event, SPI held its inaugural show in 2004 and was designed to serve and advance the solar energy industry by bringing together the people, products, and professional development opportunities that drive the solar industry and are forging its bright future. The show has since evolved to match the growth of the industry, bringing together an extensive alliance of renewable energy leaders to become the largest gathering of solar, smart energy, energy storage, and hydrogen fuel cell professionals in North America. As the anchor of North America Smart Energy Week, the event has diversified to include Energy Storage International (ESI)—the largest storage event in North America, the Smart Energy Microgrid Marketplace, Hydrogen+Fuel Cells International, and The Technical Symposium.

This event focuses solely on creating an environment that fosters the exchange of ideas, knowledge and expertise for furthering solar energy development in the United States. Designed and produced by Solar Energy Trade Shows, our events supply your company with solutions that further your success. Offering superior networking, visibility and value, Solar Energy Trade Shows events are important to any company active in the renewable energy market.

Unlike other industry events, all proceeds from North America Smart Energy Week support the expansion of the energy industry through SEIA and SEPA’s year-round research and education activities, and SEIA’s extensive advocacy efforts. Our primary mission is to deliver on the missions of both SEIA and SEPA in a way that strengthens the industry domestically and globally, through networking and education, and by creating an energetic and engaging marketplace to connect buyers and suppliers.
