NuGen’s Bristol Landfill Solar Project is a powerful example of the company’s model –transforming a municipal capped landfill into an efficient source of reliable power that is now being used by Rhode Island’s largest commercial consumer of energy.
CHALLENGE
The Bristol Landfill Solar Project represents the largest solar site on a capped landfill in Rhode Island’s history. The effort covered 30 acres, consisted of 20,962 solar panels and targeted an estimated annual production of 8.7MM kWh – roughly the same amount of energy to power 700 homes or offset 9MM miles driven by gasoline-powered vehicles.
Because of the scope and significance of the project, NuGen wanted to team up with trusted partners with proven experience in navigating challenges and delivering reliable products. Community communications was also a consideration. NuGen wanted partners that could proactively deal with local residents’ concerns.

There has been little to no maintenance required. NuGen reports the same 30 Yaskawa SOLECTRIA® XGI 1500-166 Series inverters it turned on the first day are still operating efficiently, and the only necessary maintenance has been to check a fan and replace a light bulb.
